The 90s slasher is getting a modern twist
Another day, another reboot. This time around, it's a 90's cult classic that will be getting a new modern approach on our cinema screens.
'Urban Legend' may have bombed at the box office, but since its release in 1998, the movie has gone on to become an underground hit with horror fanatics.
Starring Jared Leto, Tara Redi, Loretta Devine, and Joshua Jackson, we see our typical American college students attending a remote New England university. Of course, not everything is as peachy as normal everyday college life, and students begin to be picked off one by one in a series of murders based on various urban legends.
Alicia Witt played lead character Natalie in the original slasher, the stereotypical helpless 90's female in a horror, who tries to warn everyone of the impending killer walking around campus. Of course, no-one believes her until its too late, and half of her friends fall to very gruesome endings. The wonderfully mad Rebecca Gayheart played the chief antagonist.
Although not the worst of movies, it was released at a time when the likes of 'Scream' and 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' were drawing in audiences and so failed to attract much attention as a new slasher on the scene. Now, it seems that movie execs have noticed a gap in the market for a fresh take on the franchise that failed to get a sequel.
Due to the reasonable success of similar modern horrors such as 'Happy Death Day' and 'Truth Or Dare', the team behind the reboot is hoping to give the 90s movie a fresh pair of eyes. According to Deadline, director Colin Minihan is already on board and has begun searching for the movie's main cast.
Minihan, who has previously directed and written other horrors 'What Keeps You Alive' and 'Extraterrestrial', is set to introduce a new spin on the classic slasher for the digital age.
In case you need reminding of the original, here's a clip from the opening of 'Urban Legends' involving THAT iconic car scene.
