As we said in our review of Logan earlier this year, one of the biggest standouts of the film was undoubtedly Dafne Keen's physical performance as Laura / X-23.
A spinoff had been mooted almost since the film opened to strong reviews, but it now looks as though it's more or less official. In an interview with THR, director James Mangold confirmed that - as of now - "we're just working on a script." Not surprisingly, the catalyst for a Laura / X-23 spinoff is twofold - one, the success of Logan, and two, the success of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman.
"Patty's success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there's less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, 'Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That's incredible. And what are we going to do with her?' And that's where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming."
Mangold, however, is keen to stress that the proposed X-23 film will be different from Logan - primarily because you can't make the same film twice and have it be just as good. "It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan," explained Mangold, "but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe."
Whether the X-23 / Laura sees the light of day remains to be seen, but if James Mangold is involved with it and you have even an inkling of the depth that Logan had, you're on to a winner.
