The crime drama beats horror 'Ouija' to the top spot by just $9,000.

The outstanding NIghtcrawler, which sees Jake Gyllenhaal in one of his best roles yet, has taken the top spot at US Box Office, as per reports released to the media today. The film, in which Gyllenhaal plays a video journalist trying to get ahead of the competition in crime-ridden Los Angeles, has received rave reports since it debuted on the big screen.

Less enthusiastic have been the reviews for 'Ouija' but, nonetheless, t'is very much the season and the flick didn't have much competition to rake in those Halloween punters. Still, you can expect this to have a pretty substantial drop-off by the time next week's numbers roll in.

Brad Pitt's war epic 'Fury' take third spot, while David Fincher's taught thriller 'Gone Girl' is in fourth with 'The Book of Life' completing the top five.
