He's headed out into the wilderness

The upcoming Netflix exclusive sees the titular detective head out of his comfort zone of the gritty streets of London and out into the wild.

Idris Elba is returning as DCI John Luther, and this week we've got our first look at what to expect from the 'Luther' movie - as well as some minor plot details about what's next for the unorthodox detective.

Originally a BBC One series from creator Neil Cross, which ran for five successful seasons, this follow-up will be a Netflix production which Elba says will allow the franchise to come into its own on a much grander scale.

He said: "We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that. It also gives Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.

"We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit. And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience."

A couple of new images from the upcoming 'Luther' movie have been released exclusively by Empire Magazine - take a look at them below.

However, with a bigger scale (and presumedly more money too) there is a risk that the heart of the series could get lost along the way. Luther is still going to have his blood-spattered woolly coat, right? According to Elba, this was also a concern of his heading into the project.

He continued: "It’s really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show. I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we didn’t] distort the parameters of Luther-land too much.

"We do amplify the action and do amplify the stakes. But [season three's] man-under-the-bed moment? That won't cost you much money. Those moments are still intact."

Let's hope that what Netflix has cooking lives up to expectations. Joining Idris Elba in the spin-off movie will be Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, who have been cast in undisclosed roles.

You can read the full 'Luther' movie story in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, which features Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones as the cover star. 'Indy 5' will be the actor's final time playing the beloved action hero.

The 'Luther' movie does not have a release date just yet, but expect more details in the new year.
