The Hunger Games has surpassed expectations to officially become the third biggest opening film of all time at the domestic US box-office.

Estimates have the Suzanne Collins book adaptation exploded onto cinema screens with an opening 3 day haul of $155 million, putting it behind only the last Harry Potter film and The Dark Knight in terms of cash money. It has also received an A cinema score from audiences, which is great news for word of mouth. Projections from box office analysts now put it at about $350 million when all is said and done and around twice that worldwide - but possibly more.

That's extraordinary for a non-sequel in today's climate; it's also a very good thing for cinemas who were having a so so few months.
