It was inevitable, and frankly, I'm shocked it took this long to happen in the first place. There will be a Dirty Dancing "reboot" and the man behind High School Musical is directing.
Kenny Ortega actually choreographed the dancing in the original, and directed some episodes of the short-lived TV series - he last shot This Is It. Lionsgate released a statement saying that the new film "is a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions."
A sequel was due to take place for years with original stars Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, but both actors apparently wanted too much money. Although the original did gross $213 million off of a $6 million budget - not including huge video and DVD sales - so they were well within their rights to demand big bucks. Casting should happen fairly swiftly.
