As Warner Bros. and DC look to expand upon the financial success of Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, they seem to be turning to more weighty directors, for want of a better phrase.
First Ben Affleck was looking to take on The Batman, now the excellent Matt Reeves will take the reign. Similar with Aquaman and the immensely talented James Wan. There were raised eyebrows, though, when Mel Gibson's name was branded around for Suicide Squad 2 as a possible helmer.
Now, a bunch of other names have been floated about namely Ruben Fleischer (the ace Zombieland, the shite Gangster Squad), Daniel Espinosa (the decent Safe House, the crap Life) and Jonathan Levine (the underrated 50/50 and the upcoming Snatched). All seem about right for the second film in a franchise. But Guy Ritchie was approached also, and has an excellent relation with Warner already - Sherlock Holmes, King Arthur...
He told Variety, “I quite fancy doing Suicide Squad 2, because I thought I could do a good job with it. I can’t do it because I’m doing something else, but I’ve felt I could really do something with that.”
There's a lot to be said for lowered expectations anyway. But Ritchie would be solid choice if Gibson doesn't happen. Although, with Aladdin coming up, that ship may have sailed. Who doesn't wanna see Mad Max direct Suicide Squad, though?
