Although we had such hopes for Gareth Edwards' take on Godzilla, it really didn't pay off in the way we expected.

Still, it was a commercial success and that's enough these days to warrant a sequel. Now, however, it looks like Warners and Legendary Pictures are doubling down on big-screen monster movies, announcing an eventual Godzilla Vs. Kong movie for 2020 and an eventual shared universe for some of old-school Hollywood's most famous monsters.

The plan is to have Kong: Skull Island hit cinemas in 2017, which will set up King Kong followed by Godzilla 2 in 2018, with Gareth Edwards returning. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who directed just one film, will be given the reigns to Kong: Skull Island. He's also got a pretty decent cast behind him, including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Toby Kebell and Samuel L. Jackson.

If you recall in Godzilla, Ken Watanabe's character worked for a group called Monarch - which is the tie between King Kong, Godzilla and gigantic extraterrestrial creatures. Simply put, the plan is to have Monarch feature in Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla and Godzilla 2 and have them act as SHIELD from the Marvel Universe.

The idea of having some sort of in-film agency to tie everything together worked for Marvel, so the plan is to have something similar here.

So, thoughts? If they can correct some of the issues everyone had with Godzilla, we could be on to something here. The idea of bringing an inexperienced director might be risky. For every Colin Trevorrow and Jurassic World, there's a Josh Trank and Fantastic Four. Jordan Vogt-Roberts' previous film, The Kings of Summer, shares almost no commonality with Kong: Skull Island, but we're guessing there was a reason why he was selected.

It'll be interesting to see how all this plays out as Warners are clearly backing this to the hilt. Characters from Japanese monster movies, like King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan, are all expected to feature later on and possibly even make their own films.

What do you think? Does a King Kong versus Godzilla movie sound interesting to you? Let us know in the comments!
