Although it'd be reasonable to assume that videogame adaptations will never work, it's not stopping studios from giving it another shot.

After the lacklustre box-office takings for Warcraft and the panning that Assassin's Creed got, you'd think that would have been it for turning gaming franchises into film franchises, but Universal Studios is gearing up - heh - for another shot at it. As we previously reported, Microsoft's Gears Of War franchise has been in the works for quite some time with directors like Len Wiseman lined up to get it on the road.

That, however, was about three or four years ago and not much has happened since then - until now, that is. Deadline reports that screenwriter Shane Salerno has been hired to start work on a screenplay, however no release date has been set or director attached.

Gears Of War is now on its fourth installment and was one of the launch game on the Xbox 360 back in 2006, so it's a legacy title for the console. How they'll handle it, who they'll cast all remains to be seen - but for now, it looks they're moving forward with it.
