The bite-sized big screen version of Akira has just offered Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund one of the lead roles of Kaneda, reports Twitchfilm.com.
French helmer Jaume Collet-Serra has been confirmed as the man who'll direct the film, after Albert Hughes was the most recent shooter to develop, and then pull out of the production. Other actors being linked to the film include Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter, while there is also an offer out to Keira Knightley to join the cast. The budget, initially, was said to be well north of $100 million; but Warner Bros have since scaled that back completely, with estimates putting it at around $90 million - small fry for a blockbuster, but far from impossible to pull off.
This will be the first film on this scale for Collet-Serra, who has directed Orphan and, more recently, Unknown.
