The film premiered at Cannes last night, but has generated a mixed reaction
One of the most anticipated blockbusters of the summer is the prequel to George Miller's 2015 hit 'Fury Road'.
That film, which rebooted the 'Mad Max' franchise of the 1980s, was a resounding success, earning $380 million at the global box office and winning six Oscars.
Now, it looks like Miller's prequel 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga', which stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role opposite Chris Hemsworth, is looking like it may be similarly triumphant after its premiere at Cannes yesterday.
The film earned a 7 minute and 50 second ovation, while the first reviews have been largely positive.
The Guardian called Taylor-Joy as "tremendous" and praised her pairing with Hemsworth, awarding the film 4/5 stars and calling it "immersive and spectacular."
Empire awarded it five stars, saying: "Quite often your eyes will not fully comprehend what you are watching, or how it could be possible."
Variety's review was a little more tempered, praising the film for its "dazzling sequences" but suggesting that it suffered from "inflated franchise overkill" and was not as potent as 'Fury Road', while the BBC gave a lukewarm 3/5, saying "Furiosa seems like one of those spin-off graphic novels that plug the gaps between two films in a franchise, but which don't quite match up to the films themselves."
According to Deadline, meanwhile, 'Elvis' director Baz Luhrmann was said to call it "a steampunk, Wagnerian opera" as he left the cinema at Cannes last night.
You can judge for yourself, however, when the film hits Irish cinemas on May 24th.
