The groundbreaking sci-fi novel inspired the likes of 'Star Wars', 'The Matrix', and many more.
At long last, the very first trailer for Denis Villeneuve's new reimagining of 'Dune' has landed online.
Set to a symphonic version of Pink Floyd's 'Eclipse', the trailer introduces Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, the son of the powerful Duke Leto Atreides, who is sent to the distant planet Arrakis by order of the Padishah Emperor to help with the mining of spice - an important substance that has all sorts of incredible properties, including the ability to travel through space at incredible speeds.
While on Arrakis, the House of Atreides - led by Paul's father, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) - is engaged in a cold war with the House of Harkonnen, who were previously custodians of Arrakis and brutalised the local populace, known as Fremen.
If all of this sounds vaguely like 'Star Wars', you're not wrong. The novel was originally written in 1965, twelve years after 'Star Wars' was first released in cinemas - so, if anything, 'Dune' was the original 'Star Wars'.
Interestingly enough, the trailer is released on the day - 39 years ago - that David Lynch finished filming on his adaptation. There's also a great documentary, 'Jodorowsky's Dune', that goes into the ill-fated attempt to make 'Dune' in the '70s, and is often described as "the greatest movie never made."
We're digressing, of course. Here's the trailer. 'Dune' arrives in Irish cinemas on December 18th.
