After last year's love it / hate it Only God Forgives and the inevitable backlash that followed Drive, you'd imagine Nicholas Winding Refn might be feeling more than a little gun-shy. Not so, apparently. The director announced via Twitter that his next film is already in the works.
I Walk The Dead will see Refn reteam with Carey Mulligan and will be an "all-female horror film" that will shoot in LA. Refn went on to promise that the film will be "full of sex" and has been in the works for some time.
Initial thoughts? Depending on who you ask, Only God Forgives was an existential horror film. Others say it was Gosling staring off into the distance for a few hours. Either way, it didn't go over with audiences the way Drive did. There's always been an element of horror in all of Refn's work so do a straight-forward horror film might be the way for him.
It's early stages yet, but we're giving Refn the benefit of the doubt. Only God Forgives felt like he lost the run of himself. Now that his ego has been corrected by its commercial and critical failure, I Walk The Dead could be a return to form.
No word as yet on a release date.
