Two highly anticipated Pixar movies are swapping dates. The Incredibles 2 will now arrive in theatres on June 15, 2018, with Toy Story 4 debuting on June 21, 2019. Here’s what we know so far about each film.
For Toy Story 4, John Lasseter, director of the original Toy Story and Toy Story 2 (and has an incredible long-standing history with the Pixar company), is directing the film, which can only be good news.
The story is by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo director), Pete Docter (Monster’s Inc director) and Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3 director). It will supposedly focus on Woody searching for his lost love Bo-Peep, who vanished in between the second and third films.
The movie is being co-directed by Josh Cooley, director of the Inside Out short film Riley’s First Date?, and is written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who previously collaborated on rom com Celeste & Jesse Forever. Supposedly, Toy Story 4 is also aiming to be a romantic comedy.
Toy Story 4 has been delayed before, having initially been announced for a June 17th 2017 release, before getting its dates swapped with Cars 3, which obvs we are definitely looking forward to more (NAT).
Still, one might say the team just want it to be absolutely perfect, and if waiting a little longer means we get a better movie (don’t forget, we waited 11 years between Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 before), then so be it.
As for The Incredibles 2, Incredibles director Brad Bird, who also directed The Iron Giant (go see that, immediately, if you haven’t already) and worked on The Simpsons, will return to write and direct the sequel. Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (composer for Up, Walle and Ratatouille) is also set for the sequel.
However, Bird has been determined to give no plot deets whatsoever, only hinting that some of the elements in the script are connected to ideas that didn’t make it into the original film. He also said he wanted to find a way to do something new with the superhero genre.
Here’s the Pixar release calendar as it currently stands:
