Although it was announced some time ago, we finally have something official on the Trainspotting sequel.
Danny Boyle's latest film, Steve Jobs, debuted to favourable reviews at this year's Telleuride Festival and is already a serious contender for this year's Oscars. Boyle himself is possibly looking at a Best Director nomination with Fassbender sure to get a nomination as well.
As for the Trainspotting sequel, Boyle's dumped a ton of information on the follow-up. For one, the working title is Trainspotting 2. Whether that'll change before it's released is anyone's guess. John Hodge, who wrote the script for the original, is back and is basing the script of Irvine Welsh's novel, Porno.
As for the cast, pretty much everyone is due to come back. Ewan McGregor and Danny Boyle have buried the proverbial axe and are ready to work again, with Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller, Kelly MacDonald, Ewen Bremmer and even Kevin McKidd all set to reprise our roles. Fans of the first one will note that (spoilers) Kevin McKidd's character died. How he's going to come back, then? Who knows.
What we do know is that Boyle is serious about this and is eager to get it on the road. If Steve Jobs performs as well as the latest tracking suggests, it's pretty much good to go.
So, thoughts? Porno was a pretty damn good read and the fact that John Hodge, the original screenwriter, is on board is a big help. Irvine Welsh is notoriously protective of his work and he's spoken openly about how adamant he is of protecting of Trainspotting's legacy. Our guess is that he wouldn't sign away the rights to this unless he felt Boyle, Hodge and the cast were up to it.
The fact that McGregor is back to reprise his role of Renton is especially good news, along with Robert Carlyle's Begbie. In short, the whole cast returning is very promising. Keep in mind, they're all in high demand so for them to sign onto this tells you they want to make it happen. Carlyle, for example, is a regular on TV's Once Upon A Time whilst Jonny Lee Miller is playing Sherlock in Elementary. Ewan McGregor's in regular work in films and Danny Boyle, as we know, is one of the biggest British directors working today.
There's no release date scheduled as of yet and the film hasn't started production, but we can expect an official announcement any day now. The question is - would people still want to see a Trainspotting sequel?
