As we reported back in 2016, Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to return to one of his defining roles - Conan The Barbarian.
The long-in-development film, known as The Legend Of Conan, would have seen Schwarzenegger back in the role and swinging a broadsword as King Conan. Chris Morgan, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, was due to take another stab at the screenplay and get the film into production at some stage this year.
As you can imagine, this didn't happen and, according to a recent interview with EW, Morgan's a bit disappointed. "At the end of the day, the studio decided that they weren’t gonna make that. I gotta say, it’s honestly a heartbreak."
"I love that first movie so much, so much, it’s one of my favorite movies," said Morgan. "We had Will Beall do a draft on (the Legend of Conan script). He killed it. Our take was Conan, 30 years later, a story like the Clint Eastwood Unforgiven. It was so awesome. Ultimately, the budget was big, the studio was not really sure of the title, and the relevance in the marketplace. They ended up letting it go. I think they’re gonna look to do a TV show or something with it."
It's a shame, as there's a huge amount of fan interest in Conan The Barbarian and Robert E. Howard, and despite the so-so reviews for the 2011 remake with Jason Momoa, a good adaptation is out there just waiting to be made.
Still, we'll always have John Milius' operatic 1982 version and that's something at least.
