There were a number of Irish nominations, but no wins

It was a good week for the Irish at last Tuesday's Golden Globes, but unfortunately that wasn't the case at last night's Critics' Choice Awards.

While 'The Banshees of Inisherin' picked up three big awards at the Golden Globes, including 'Best Actor' for Colin Farrell, it failed to win any of the nine awards that it was nominated for.

Jessie Buckley, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for 'Women Talking', also missed out, as did Paul Mescal, who earned a nomination for 'Aftersun'.

Farrell and his co-star Brendan Gleeson were absent from the ceremony as they had both tested positive for Covid following last Tuesday's Golden Globes. Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Pfeiffer also missed last night's event after contracting Covid in recent days.

However, the Curtis-starring 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' fared much better at the CCA, picking up five awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan.

The awards were presented by Chelsea Handler, who quipped: "It is an honor to be here hosting tonight after everything that we’ve all been through together over the past few years. Between COVID, Monkeypox, the 'Don’t Worry Darling' press tour, it’s been a lot. I’m just happy to be here tonight supporting the critics’ right to choose."

Meanwhile, an emotional Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for his role in 'The Whale', saying in his victory speech: "'The Whale' is about love. It’s about redemption. It’s about finding the light in a dark place," before thanking his co-stars and director, Darren Aronofsky. "I was in the wilderness, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs," he said. "But you found me and, like all the best directors, you merely just showed me where to go to get to where I needed to be.”

Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her role in 'Tár', while Indian blockbuster 'RRR' surprised many by picking up 'Best International Film'.
