The film is based on a true story set in Pennsylvania
He is undoubtedly one of the hottest properties in Hollywood since his Oscar win earlier this month.
Still, it looks as though Cillian Murphy's desire to play interesting roles rather than feature in blockbusters remains intact following his success with 'Oppenheimer'.
The Cork actor's next role has just been announced, and will see him both star in and produce 'Blood Runs Coal' - a drama set in 1960s Pennsylvania. Based on a true story, the film will be adapted from Mark A. Bradley's book 'Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America', which chronicles the incredible story of a "corrupt union leader who murders a rival and is taken down by the lawyer son of the slain coal miner. "
'Spectre' and 'Ford v Ferrari' writer Jez Butterworth will write the script with his brother John-Henry ('Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny', 'Edge of Tomorrow').
Murphy will play Chip Yablonski, a labour attorney whose father Joseph 'Jock' Yablonski was a coal miner-turned-union activist after his own father was killed in a mine explosion. After Jock, his wife and daughter were brutally murdered, Chip pursues every legal avenue available to seek justice for their deaths.
It's safe to say there are shades of 'Killers of the Flower Moon' in abundance, but we're looking forward to seeing what Murphy brings to the role.
He can next be seen on the big screen, of course, in 'Small Things Like These', which is still awaiting a cinema release date having premiered in Berlin last month.
