Chris Columbus is regarded to be a bit of a hack with minimal helming talent. He’s what some folk refer to in the business as a "shooter" - meaning that is basically all he does. Other guys like Lee Tamahori are the action equivalent to his bland comedy directing. Well next he’s going all political and directing a biopic of Bobby Kennedy - dealing with the ill-fated former presidential candidates’ life before he was assassinated in 1968. Emilio Estevez recently wrote and directed an ensemble piece around the night of said assassination called Bobby that was actually a very lovely film. Columbus will write the script himself, but has other projects that may go into production before it. I’ll give the man props for writing Gremlins and The Goonies, but he’s got about as much flair as a fart being lit in the bath.
