You forgot that a third Gremlins movie was happening, didn't you? It's OK, we sorta forgot too.

The last we heard about Germlins 3 was back in 2015, when Chris Columbus - yes, he of Home Alone fame - talked about how the film was going to be much more in tune with the original film. In other words, it was going to be dark, macabre and very funny - all of the things you could possibly want in a Gremlins movie.

Since then, it's gone pretty quiet. However, in a recent interview with /Film, Columbus was quizzed again about Gremlins 3 and gave an update on the status of the film and a few more tidbits about the script, inferring that the script was complete and that he was "really proud" of it.

"It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon."

As for a definitive time-frame on when we'll see the film on our screens, Columbus didn't divulge any information, but definitely has ideas about how the film is going to work with the advent of CGI. According to Columbus, it'll play a minimal role at best. "CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18, 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets."

/Film's report lists Gremlins 3 as being in active development at Warner Bros., but there's been little in the way of any significant movement on it. Thankfully, director Joe Dante is still active and working, and his grasp of the screenplay went a long way to making the film what it was, so it's really just a case of Warners getting in gear and making it happen.

Considering how every other property is being rejigged and kicked out into cinemas, why not this one? Wait, hang on...
