Say it isn't so... Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief and I Love You, Beth Cooper helmer Chris Columbus is apparently Warner Bros. favourite to take over the reins on Superman.

The Dark Knight helmer Christopher Nolan had been anointed godfather of the new flick, and would oversee production in a similar way to Peter Jackson on District 9. But reports this morning are suggesting that the studio sees Columbus as safe hands, after he successfully (financially at least) got the ball rolling on the Harry Potter franchise.

I've heard Columbus is a lovely man, and he's written some of the best movies of my childhood (Gremlins, The Goonies); but as a director he's horribly bland. I've yet to see a film helmed by him that I liked, and I can't see how he and Nolan - two guys with obviously different cinematic sensibilities - would work together. Time will tell...
