As one of the most hotly contested female roles we've had in ages, we thought any actress in their right mind would jump at the chance to star as Hillary Clinton in the political biopic that would focus on the formative years of her career. Not so.

Carey Mulligan had been offered the job, even though we thought it was a toss up between Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain and Reese Witherspoon, and has allegedly turned it down. WHY?

Well we don't know, to be honest. Perhaps it's down to scheduling conflicts. Or perhaps it's the pressures of a role that will be closely scrutinised, but surely she'd be up to the task? She has proven herself time and time again. The Hollywood Reporter explain that she was offered the role by James Ponsoldt after a business meeting last week but kindly made her excuses and 'could not commit'.

Carey, 28 and wife of Mumford and Sons frontman will next star in The Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis.
