What might have been

We'll finally see 'Captain Marvel' hit the big screen in just a few days now. However it turns out the superhero was originally going to debut in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' back in 2015.

People have learned about this through a 2015 interview with Birth. Movies. Death. that’s newly resurfaced and making the rounds. In it, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige explained that a scene with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch was originally meant for Captain Marvel in an early 'Age Of Ultron' draft.

According to Feige, he had to push back against writer-director Joss Whedon, who really wanted Captain Marvel in the ensemble superhero sequel.

“The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots. Joss said, ‘We’ll cast her later!’ And I said, ‘Yeah Joss, we’ll cast her later.’ [Whispers to an invisible associate who isn’t Joss] ‘We’re not putting her in there!’

“Finally Joss was like 'Let’s use those plates to let Scarlet Witch fly into frame, give her a big entrance?' And that makes sense - she’s come to their side, and she deserves the cool intro, which will feed into another movie we start shooting in a few weeks.”

Feige explained that he felt Captain Marvel deserved her own back story like the other title MCU characters:

“[Captain Marvel] was in a draft. But to me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, ‘Who is that?’ It’s just not the way we’ve done it before.”

Brie Larson got cast in the role the following year. It was officially announced at 2016's Comic-Con International in San Diego.

'Captain Marvel' hits Irish theatres on March 8.
