The director was fired two weeks before the end of production

Because he retained his directing credit, Bryan Singer is set to make tens of millions from 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'

The Freddie Mercury biopic, although garnering mixed to favourable reviews, has become a runaway success for 20th Century Fox. The film is reported to have only knocked up a $50 million production bill; and so far, has taken in a staggering $817 million in theatres worldwide.

Not only that, Rami Malek's portrayal of Mercury earned him both a Golden Globe and a SAG award, as well as the film receiving five Oscar nominations at this year's upcoming awards.

Now, despite being fired from set two weeks before wrapping production, with Fox left scrambling for a replacement, Bryan Singer is reportedly set to make a hefty bonus from the success of 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'

The Hollywood Reporter claims that two sources close to the biopic have confirmed Singer's extra pay-out, which is set to be somewhere north of $40 million. During production, the director was known for his absences on set, lethargic attitude, and even reportedly got into a heated argument with Rami Malek. The last straw for Fox execs was when Singer announced he had to take tare of a sick family member, and up and left with two weeks left to shoot. 'Eddie the Eagle' director Dexter Fletcher was flown in as a last-minute replacement.

Add to that the number of sexual allegations that have been raised against Bryan Singer recently; and the fact that he wasn't thanked in any of the thank you speeches from award shows, and you can come to your own conclusions.

The sources have also said that 20th Century Fox are reportedly exploring all possible financial obligations to Singer, in the hopes that they won't have to shell out the reported $40 million figure. As of yet, it is unclear how the situation will turn out. Singer was fired, but he retained his directing credit - so he is due some sort of pay-out for the success of 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' However, exactly how much compensation he retained after severing ties with Fox execs remains to be seen.

Despite the recent allegations of sexual misconduct and his world-wind work ethic, Bryan Singer has been signed up to direct the female-led 'Red Sonja.'
