Is the film finally coming out of the woodwork?
Time and time again, we end up getting our hopes up about fresh news regarding the sequel film. Today, however, news about some interesting developments regarding the film that's been in the works for countless years has us intruiged once again.
Hollywood icon Brad Pitt is now attached to 'Beetlejuice 2', according to reports.
The actor-turned-producer's company Plan B has reportedly boarded the Tim Burton sequel film from Warner Bros. At the moment, there is no script for the follow-up, nor is there any talent attached (either in front of or behind the camera).
Plan B, which Pitt founded with Jennifer Aniston and Brad Grey in 2001, has earned itself some major success over the years. The production company currently has a partnership with Amazon Studios, Warner Bros. and MGM, and their most recent efforts include the Oscar-nominated film 'Minari' and Prime Video's sublime effort 'The Underground Railroad'.
2019 was the last we heard of 'Beetlejuice 2', with the project officially shelved according to a representative for Warner Bros. Rumblings about a planned sequel date back to the mid-2010s. In 2016, the original film's director Tim Burton said it was "a go"; Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder were also expected to reprise their roles as the titular character and Lydia Deetz, with Ryder confirming the sequel was in active development as far back as 2013.
The fantasy comedy from 1988 is often acclaimed as one of Burton's best works. The classic film sees the spirits of a deceased couple Barbara and Adam (played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) harass the Deetz family and their cronies who move into their quaint house. While the family attempts to redecorate, the couple enlists the help of Beetlejuice in order to scare them away. Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones and Glenn Shadix also starred.
While this could potentially be great news for fans of the original, it's important to not get our hopes up too much once again. Brad Pitt becoming attached to 'Beetlejuice 2' is a certain glimmer of hope, it's important to remember that the sequel has been doing the rounds for so long, and has been shelved at least once in the process, that anything could happen.
But we have to admit - it would be pretty great to see Keaton back in that pinstriped suit once last time, right?
