Featuring Ashton Kutcher in a big cowboy hat

B.J. Novak's directorial debut 'Vengeance', a satirical true-crime mystery, has got its first trailer.

The film, starring Novak alongside Ashton Kutcher and Issa Rae, centres around a New York journalist called Ben who arrives at an ex-flame's funeral in Texas. Compelled to make a true-crime podcast about her mysterious death, he teams up with the woman's brother to get to the bottom of it, all while trying to avoid a violent conclusion.

The film comedically explores the true-crime obsessed nature of modern day America. If the trailer is anything to go by, there will be a lot of laughs and big characters.

Boyd Holbrook, J. Smith-Cameron, and Dove Cameron make up the rest of the ensemble cast. Novak also directed and wrote the script for the film.

"It's so easy to misinterpret our connections these days, and it's also easy to fall in love with someone after they’re out of your life, when you can obsess over their photos and your own memories and regrets," Novak said in a recent interview with Variety about the film. "I started there which led me to this idea: what if you were expected to avenge the death of someone you barely knew?"

Novak is best known for his work on the U.S. version of 'The Office'. He starred as the narcissistic Ryan and was also a writer on the show. He has also featured in films like 'The Founder' and 'Inglorious Basterds', as well as writing several books and short stories.

Vengeance will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival this June before it's theatrical release. Watch the full trailer below.

'Vengeance' releases in cinemas on Friday, July 29.
