In an interview with NME, the actor talks music, partying and recent roles
Benedict Cumberbatch wouldn't be the first actor to spring to mind when you thought who would have the best taste in music. Turns out, his isn't too shabby.
In the interview, the 'Sherlock' star reveals he was a massive fan of Radiohead growing up and had a rather awkward first meeting with Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke. They came to see his performance in 'Hamlet' in 2015.
"I was really nervous because it hadn’t been a great performance, so I was looking at the ground all embarrassed. But so were they – and Thom was muttering: 'Yeah, we’re really big 'Sherlock' fans…' There was all this shifting around, all looking at our shoelaces. It was so weird!"
Talking about growing up as a teenager in the 90's he said: "It was the middle of Britpop. So I was definitely part of the 'Blur or Oasis?' thing."
He admits he was team Blur. Just in case Fr. Damo comes looking.
He also touched on being a bit of a party animal in his youth: "I was very, very into techno for a long time. That was my bag at uni," he said. "I went clubbing a lot and all sorts of nonsense ensued".
The 'Doctor Strange' star also recalled studying transcendental meditation in Tibet and getting abducted at gunpoint in South Africa after his car tyre burst.
"It taught me that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own. It’s made me want to live a life less ordinary. I will always remember that ‘How to Disappear Completely’ by Radiohead was playing [when the tyre burst]."
Cumberbatch's upcoming film 'The Power of the Dog' required a certain level of method acting. He stayed in character on-set and even went as far as having a frosty relationship with co-star Kirsten Dunst off-camera.
"I didn’t want to be really mean to Kirsten, but I needed to stay in character so I didn’t speak to her on-set. She was the same. We were the negative to each other’s positive, repelled by each other.”
Discussing combining his love of music and film together into potentially starring in a biopic, the actor said: "There are some rock stars I’d like to play. But I don’t think it’ll happen and I’m not going to say who. You’ll have to guess."
'The Power Of The Dog' is in select Irish cinemas on November 19 and on Netflix from December 1.
