Yes, there's another remake on the way, but this one means an opportunity to see Broadway star Idina Menzel on screen.
US network Lifetime has announced plans to give Beaches a contemporary reboot, this time as a made for TV movie. They have already had success with a similar style remake of Steel Magnolias.
Beaches is a classic weepy from 1981, which stars Bette Middler and Barbara Hershey as lifelong best friends who go through life's ups and downs together. It's directed by Garry Marshall, who passed away last week at the age of 81. However, the project has been in development for over a year, so it's unlikely the Marshall's death influenced the decision to go ahead with the project.
In the forthcoming remake, Menzel will take on the role of CC, the character played by Bette Middler. CC is a struggling singer, who is eventually discovered and gets her big break. Menzel has previously appeared on Broadway in the musicals Rent and Wicked, and voiced Elsa in Frozen. She'll be putting that vocal talent to good use for the film's iconic song Wind Beneath My Wings.
No other casting decisions have been announced. Beaches is set to air on Lifetime sometime in 2017.
