Although it's been rumoured and stuck in development hell for more than a few years, it looks like Battlestar Galactica may finally get the big-screen adaptation it so richly deserves.
Bryan Singer was originally lined up to direct, but departed for X-Men when it got stuck in studio politicking. Since then, the fate has been more than uncertain, with many giving up on the whole thing entirely. However, a report surfaced earlier today that says it's back on and it's got a new writer in the form of Lisa Joy, who's currently attached as writer / exec-producer of HBO's Westworld.
As well as this, Free State of Jones / Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence is reportedly close to signing on as director. As to whether or not it'll follow Ronald D. Moore's highly-rated television series is anyone's guess. That show was, of course, adapted from Glen Larson's 1978 television series. Plus, it's been almost thirteen years since Ronald D. Moore's show debuted on television, so is there any point in following that level?
It's hard to say, to be honest. The updated version is widely considered to be one of the greatest television series ever made and, well, it ended on a pretty interesting note. So, what's next? It's hard to say. They could very take on from that TV show and move it forward. It could go back to the '70s high-fantasy elements and turn it into a Star Wars-competing franchise, like it was originally envisioned.
The fact that Lisa Joy is taking it on says a lot, however. Westworld hasn't hit our screens, but it's already getting a lot of noise over its depiction of sexuality and nudity, so it has to be something more closer to the 2003 reboot than the '70s version.
