James Cameron has confirmed that the next three Avatar sequels will be filmed in New Zealand.

Making the announcement yesterday Cameron confirmed the location and expressed his excitement at bringing the film back to New Zealand. He also confirmed we could expect the first of the sequels by December 2016.

'It's quite a thrill to be officially saying that we're bringing the Avatar films to New Zealand, We had such a wonderful experience here making the first film, and obviously the result of all of the talent in New Zealand speaks for itself. It's a great pleasure for us to recreate that winning combination,' he said.

The three films will be filmed together and we can expect the following two sequels to released in 2017 and 2018. Avatar was the highest grossing film in history when it made $2.7 billion. Cameron said about the upcoming sequel, 'Basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na'vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world'.
