Disney has made a raft of changes to their schedule
Disney have taken it upon themselves to shake up their cinema releases by shifting their biggest releases back.
Every single one of the 'Avatar' movies, that's four sequels in case you weren't paying attention, have been move along by a whole year. James Cameron's 'Avatar 2' has now been moved from December 17, 2021 to December 16, 2022. Production recently resumed on the set of the movie in New Zealand.
Interestingly, Sony's 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' sequel has taken the movie's original spot, moving its date back by a month.
In doing so, every following 'Avatar' sequel has also been moved further down the line, meaning that 'Avatar 5' won't be on our screens until December 22, 2028.
Of course, this is all down to cinema theatres across the globe tentatively opening their doors during what is still a global pandemic. Disney is obviously wanting to make sure their releases are coming out at an optimum time, when we will hopefully be back to more normality.
Not only that, but the untitled 'Star Wars' trilogy series directed by Taika Waititi has now moved from December 16, 2022 to December 22, 2023. The second instalment will now be in December 2025, with the third entry in December 2027.
Disney's live-action 'Mulan', which was on the cusp of release back in March, has now mysteriously gone off of Disney's calendar altogether. Time will tell what will happen to the movie - it will either get pushed back to later this year, into 2021, or will be headed to Disney+ at some point (which will be Disney's last resort).
However, it's not all bad news. Disney is still planning on 'The New Mutants' (which has been delayed since August 2018) to retain its theatrical release date of this August - a property which was made by 20th Century Fox before the Disney/Fox merger was struck. There's also 'Bill and Ted Face the Music' which will release simultaneously on demand and in cinemas in September.
