'Avengers: Endgame' has been dethroned after two years at the top.
Despite the fact that cinemas globally are either closed or at vastly reduced capacities, 'Avatar' has managed to take back the title of the highest-grossing movie ever made from 'Avengers: Endgame'.
The 2009 sci-fi epic was re-released in China this Friday just gone, and in the course of two days managed to close the gap between it and 'Avengers: Endgame', earning just over $12 million to grab the title.
This puts 'Avatar' at $2.802 billion, lording it over 'Avengers: Endgame' and its $2.797 billion. Indeed, all 'Avatar' needed to do was earn $7.7 million in the two days, but it being James Cameron, they only went and overdid it.
The odds on 'Avengers: Endgame' retaking the crown, however, appears to be slim to none. For one, 'Avatar' is probably going to get another re-release when 'Avatar 2' finally arrives in cinemas in 2022. Not only that, Marvel appears to be shifting its weight to Disney+ with the likes of 'WandaVision', 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', not to mention that Marvel movies tend to be fired out at a rate of knots and re-releases aren't necessarily part of it.
