The Wrestler and Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky is officially in talks with Fox to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2.
According to online New York magazine, Vulture, Aronofsky was very interested in the Superman reboot, before Warner Bros. went with Zack Snyder to direct. But Hugh Jackman has apparently made clear to execs that he wants his Fountain director on board, for a far darker sounding Wolverine sequel. The original was completely slated by critics - for good reason - and Jackman obviously wants to be careful with his prize pig this time. Vulture are also saying that Warner Bros. still want to work with Aronofsky, and have offered him a gig helming Tales From the Gangster Squad; like Superman, another film Ben Affleck turned down helming.
Black Swan is garnering Oscar buzz for Aronofsky, Mila Kunis and star Natalie Portman. I've heard more than one critic call it "the year's best." It'd be great to finally see what the talented director can do with a huge budget and creative control.
