It's the Oscar-winning actress's birthday today
Anne Hathaway has proven to be an extraordinarily talented actress. Working across comedy, musicals, drama and fantasy, she can do it all and continually impress.
While she has starred in a few duds of late like 'Ocean's 8', 'The Hustle' and 'The Witches', the performances that Anne Hathaway gave in them still shine out.
The number one scene we picked from her career will hardly come as a surprise. (Sure she won an Oscar for it)
Still, picking five scenes from her illustrious career was tricky.
So while she has delivered awesome performances in the likes of 'Interstellar', 'Rachel Getting Married' and 'Love and Other Drugs', we opted for scenes we think have been iconic to cinema and are synonymous with the actress.
With that in mind, here are what we think have been Anne Hathaway's 5 best scenes.
5. 'The Devil Wears Prada' - The makeover
'The Devil Wears Prada' was truly ruled by Meryl Streep in the role of Miranda Priestly. But the true depth of the editor-in-chief's wickedness would have never come across without Anne Hathaway's performance as the heroine, Andy. The aspiring journalist eventually accepts that the only way she can be accepted into her job at 'Runway' is by embracing the world of fashion and beauty.
4. 'The Dark Knight Rises' - "Not everything, not yet"
Hathaway plays a very different Selina Kyle/Catwoman to her predecessor, Michelle Pfeiffer, in 'The Dark Knight Rises', and it works. Throughout the film, she exhibits a fierce independence and strength, easily holding her own in this world of corrupt men. But she falls for Bruce Wayne, in spite of herself; and in this scene, her only vulnerable moment in 'The Dark Knight' sequel, she implores him to leave with her. For he has done enough for Gotham.
3. 'The Princess Diaries' - Makeover time (again)
Well we couldn't exclude the movie that kicked off Anne Hathaway's career! Now we're well aware that this is yet another makeover scene (we were between this and the tea scene with the Queen of Genovia from 'The Princess Diaries') but the actress does them so damn well. In this example, she particularly shows off her knack for comedy, a genre she continues to dip into skillfully twenty years later.
2. 'Brokeback Mountain' - The phone call
(We apologise for the weird emojis running through this video, but it was the best version of the scene on Youtube...) When it comes to 'Brokeback Mountain', the performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are at the forefront. But Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams deserve a lot of credit for their roles too. In this scene, Hathaway's character explains how Jack (Gyllenhaal) died to Ennis (Ledger), conveying a multitude of emotions given the at times fraught nature of their marriage and the brutal nature of his death.
1. 'Les Miserables' - "I Dreamed a Dream"
Last week, looking at Emma Stone's best scenes, we said her performance of "Audition" in 'La La Land' can be likened to Anne Hathaway's rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" in 'Les Mis'. Both songs were simply stunning and the actresses earned their Oscars for them. It's quite striking how the camera stays on Hathaway through her breakdown in the powerhouse number. Pass the tissues, please.
