Universal Studios have for some time now been trying to get a 'Universal Monsters' franchise off the ground.
Simply put, Universal owns the rights to a lot of classic horror characters - including the Bride of Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolfman, Van Helsing - and they're keen to get their own shared, cinematic universe ala Marvel / Disney and DC Comics / Warner Bros.
So, to that end, they've put Alex Kurtzmann of Star Trek / Alias / Bad Robot fame with Chris 'Fast Five / Six / Seven' Morgan in charge of the whole project and they're eyeing up one particular lady for Bride of Frankenstein - namely, Angelina Jolie.
However, reports suggest that Angelina Jolie isn't actually all that jazzed about taking the lead. In fact, the only reason Universal rowed in behind Jolie's arthouse flick By The Sea was to potentially woo her into signing on as the Bride of Frankenstein. It's not unheard of for big studios, especially ones like Universal, to greenlight the type of films that will make zero money in exchange for starring in one of their tentpoles.
Of course, the question is whether or not audiences would actually respond to a shared universe of classic monsters. They're obviously betting heavily on it if they're going to these lengths to get Jolie onboard, but are audiences up for it?
