The Irish-language film is one of 15 films shortlisted for the category
It's topping Irish end-of-year lists left, right and centre - including our own here at entertainment.ie - so it's no surprise that 'An Cailín Ciúin' is making waves internationally, too.
The Irish-language film has officially been shortlisted for 'Best International Film' at the Academy Awards, making history in the process.
Colm Bairéad's beautiful film, adopted from Claire Keegan's short story 'Foster' and starring remarkable young actress Catherine Clinch, joined 15 other films from around the world on the shortlist.
Of these 15 films, five will receive a nomination for 'Best International Film' - so we're keeping our fingers tightly crossed that this special film goes all the way to Hollywood.
It's the first time an Irish-language film has ever been shortlisted in the category, and only the second-ever Irish film to do so - the first being 'Viva' in 2016.
The film is currently on a limited run in New York and Los Angeles, but will be released nationwide in the US in February 2023.
The Oscar nominations are revealed on January 24th.
Bairéad and producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoi said:
"We are absolutely thrilled that An Cailín Ciúin / The Quiet Girl has been shortlisted by the Academy for Best International Feature Film and we are particularly proud to be the first Irish-language film to have achieved this. What an historic moment for Irish-language cinema! We feel privileged and honoured to continue to represent Ireland as An Cailín Ciúin / The Quiet Girl bids to secure a nomination at the 95th Academy Awards. We couldn’t have made it this far without the incredible support of Screen Ireland, TG4, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and the hard work and dedication of our distributors. Special thanks also to the Irish Film and Television Academy for its invaluable support and commitment and to the audiences who came in such record numbers to see our film so far”.
