The Cannes Film Festival opened last night with a screening of Woody Allen's rom-com Midnight In Paris. Allen, who has displayed an affinity for shooting in European cities in recent years, continued that trend with the Owen Wilson starring film about an American writer who moves to Paris to alleviate writer's block and, somehow, gets transported back to the 1920s where he rubs shoulders with Hemingway, Picasso, Dali and TS Eliot.
Speaking at the festival, Allen said "Now that I finally got a chance to do a film in Paris, I hope that I can repay the overwhelming support and loyalty that they have shown me over the years".
Reports coming from the festival suggest that Allen's film, while not on par with his classics Annie Hall or Manhattan, is a return to form following a few disappointing efforts recently.
French first lady Carla Bruni, who was a small role in the film, did not attend the gala screening fuelling rumours that she's pregnant. It should also be noted that a film satirizing the life of her husband and his presidency is also playing at the festival.
