A new adaption of the famous novel
The gritty teaser trailer for Netflix's 'All Quiet on the Western Front' has dropped, showing the horrors of World War I.
The adaptation of the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque will debut at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.
'All Quiet on the Western Front' tells the gripping story of a young German soldier Paul Bäumer, played by Felix Kammerer, on the Western Front of World War I. Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches.
Albrecht Schuch, Moritz Klaus, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanović, Daniel Brühl and Adrian Grünewald also star.
The film comes from German director Edward Berger ('Deutschland 83'), who penned the script with Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson.
The original book was a huge success upon its release in 1929, selling over a million copies that year. Its story resonated with survivors of the war and was praised for its portrayal of the effects the war had on a generation. It was also one of the books publicly burnt by the Nazis during their rise to power in 1933. The book was banned in some parts of Europe upon release due to it's anti-war messaging.
The subsequent adaptation of the book directed by Lewis Milestone won two Academy Awards in 1930.
The trailer shows Paul and his friends during the early days of war, full of comradery and adventurous spirit. However, scenes of the horrors of trench warfare, bleak conditions and death are interspersed throughout.
Before its release on Netflix, the movie will be shown in German cinemas from September 29.
