The North American box-office had a surprise number one this weekend, when Emma Stone starrer, The Help, went up a spot from its number 2 bow last week to top the charts.

The Disney flick coined $20.4 million in its second weekend, topping the charts ahead of the extremely well received Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which is in second spot with an estimated $16.3 million. All new releases underperformed; Spy Kids 4 pulled in $12 million, followed by Conan The Barbarian with a paltry $10 million. The biggest disappointment was the (actually very good) remake of Fright Night - which had gotten generally excellent reviews. Despite higher 3D prices, it opened way back in sixth spot with $8.3 million. Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin star in the very entertaining horror flick, which opens here on September 2nd and is well worth checking out.

Also opening was romantic drama, One Day, which did as expected with a modest $5.1 million in ninth spot. Generally speaking, August is an awful month for releases at the box office and this weekend proved it. Still disappointed Fright Night didn't do better, though.
