It's a whole new world
The number of Disney reboots being made is getting out of control. Last year there weren't one, or two, but three that hit cinemas in 'Dumbo', 'Aladdin' and 'The Lion King'. Oh, and there was a sequel to 'Maleficent' too.
In fact sequels seem to be the new direction these reboots are taking with a follow-up to 'The Jungle Book' currently in the works. And with 'Aladdin' having made over $1 billion globally at the box office, it makes sense the House of Mouse are looking to do a Part 2.
Variety first dropped the news that an 'Aladdin' sequel is in the works. However we don't know a whole lot about it yet.
The hope is that all three leads - Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott - will return. However offers will not be extended to them until a script is ready.
That script will be penned by John Gatins ('Flight', 'Kong Skull Island') and Andrea Berloff ('World Trade Center', 'Straight Outta Compton').
Producers have spent about six months working out what direction the new movie will take. It will not borrow from either of the direct-to-video sequels ('Return of Jafar', 'Aladdin and the King of Thieves') of the animated original.
No word yet on whether director Guy Ritchie will return.
The movie will be released theatrically rather than going to Disney+. Disney+ are, however, producing an 'Aladdin' spin-off focussing on Billy Magnussen's dim-witted Prince Anders from the reboot.
