Jeff Nichols has been lined up to take on the third movie in the burgeoning horror franchise.
Although the second movie hasn't been released yet - because of, well, everything - 'A Quiet Place' is already building itself up a horror franchise.
Deadline is reporting that Jeff Nichols, the director behind 'Loving' starring our own Ruth Negga, 'Midnight Special', and 'Take Shelter', has been lined up to direct the third chapter of 'A Quiet Place'. Details are light, but it's understood that a release date for 2022 is set, and John Krasinski will likely get a 'story by' credit.
Intriguingly, Deadline's report seems to suggest that the third one won't necessarily be a sequel, but rather a sidequel or possibly even a spin-off. One of the intriguing parts of the first movie was how you're essentially dropped into the world in ruins, leaving the audience to imagine how it went so bad.
While it appears that 'A Quiet Place 2' will examine that story in some detail, you could also imagine how there's an entire world out there that's dealing with the horrific sound mutants / aliens / whatever that are out there. Not only that, Jeff Nichols has form in this area.
'Take Shelter', starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, is a fascinating psychological thriller about a man in rural America who's haunted by dreams of the end of the world and becomes obsessed with trying to prepare his house against an oncoming storm, but soon realises the danger might be him. 'Midnight Special', meanwhile, was like a '70s road movie but mixed with elements from John Carpenter's 'Starman' and 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind'.
All in all, it feels like a good fit for both, so here's hoping for more aural scares in the next two years. 'A Quiet Place 2' is set for release on April 23rd, 2021.
