We're not quite sure yet how we feel about this.
Deadline broke the news that Tristar plans on revisiting the universe brought to the screen by Jim Henson in 1986 - a fantastical world which was beloved in many of our childhoods.
The iconic fantasy flick stars the late great David Bowie as the Goblin King who steals Sarah’s (teenage Jennifer Connolly) infant brother Toby and hides him in his castle. Sarah must make her way through the intricate and deceptive labyrinth that surrounds the castle if she is to save her brother.
Deadline announced that Tristar already has a director and writer lined up in Fede Alvarez and Jay Basu, respectively.
Alvarez is best-known for horror films Don’t Breathe and 2013’s Evil Dead while Jay Basu wrote Monsters: Dark Continent.
The two of them will take on the new project after they have finished work on The Girl In The Spider’s Web, a project which they are also working on together and which is a continuation of the Lisbeth Salander saga that began with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Reportedly, the new Labyrinth movie will be set within the same universe created in the original movie, but it is not a remake.
The new film will, like the original, involve The Jim Henson Co. (which means, we’re guessing, there will still be puppets), who’ll be co-producing with Tristar. Bowie’s character will not be a part of the new story, which is probably just as well because no one can recreate Bowie.
