With father-and-son crime drama Place Beyond The Pines in cinemas this week, we thought we'd take a look at some of the best father-and-son pairings in film. Granted, only one of those we picked were actually in a film together, we still think it's worth a read. And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon...
5. Jeff Bridges & Lloyd Bridges
Interestingly, these two have never starred in adult roles together. Jeff, and his brother, Beau, had non-speaking roles as toddlers when their father Lloyd was working on a TV series in the US called 'Sea Hunt'. Jeff Bridges is, of course, famous for such roles as Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski and Rooster Cogburn in the Coen Brothers' 'True Grit'. Lloyd Bridges, on the other hand, was more known in later years for comedic work, particularly 'Airplane!' and the 'Hot Shots' films. Here's some of his best bits in 'Airplane!'
4. Clint Eastwood & Scott Eastwood
It must be tough being Clint Eastwood's son. The man's a living legend and trying to live up to his reputation is next to impossible. So what do you do? Forge your own career in something else or follow in his footsteps? Considering Scott Eastwood was in the pretty terrible Texas Chainsaw 3D and the equally rough Trouble With The Curve, it's fair to say Clint is probably a little disappointed in his choice of roles and, well, lack of acting ability.
3. Richard Harris & Jared Harris
Anyone who saw the season just gone of Mad Men will tell you that Jared Harris is fast becoming one of the best British actors. He was brilliant as the villain Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and was also in Lincoln, playing Ulysses S. Grant. He's also lined up to play Hodge Starkweather in the film adaption of The Mortal Instruments. His father, Richard Harris, also worked in a young-adult franchise. He played the original Dumbledore before passing away in 2002. Richard Harris, of course, starred in hundreds of films, including Gladiator, Unforgiven and The Field. Here he is beating the shit out of Mad Men co-star Vincent Kartheiser.
2. Carl Reiner & Rob Reiner
He may be known as Saul from Ocean's Eleven, but before that, Carl Reiner was a talented comedian, writer and director. He directed Steve Martin in two of his best films, The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains. Rob Reiner, arguably, had a better career in directing. He did our Caroline's all-time favourite film, When Harry Met Sally – as well as Stephen King's Misery.
1. Martin Sheen & Charlie Sheen
We know Martin Sheen also has another son, Emilio Estevez, but we're picking Charlie Sheen purely for that scene in Hot Shots: Part Deux. “I loved you in Wall Street!”
