Audrey Hepburn would have been 91 this bank holiday
Audrey Hepburn is one of classic Hollywood's best actresses.
And it's no wonder, between her striking, distinct look and a vast range of credits. Between the likes of Holly Golightly, Gigi, Eliza Doolittle and Princess Ann, she has given us numerous iconic movie characters over the years.
May 4th would've been Hepburn's birthday. The actress passed away in 1993 at the age of 63.
We're celebrating the legendary actress by rewatching - or in some cases, watching for the first time - these classics.
Breakfast at Tiffany's
What can be said about 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' that hasn't already been said? The smart, funny, touching flick still holds up wonderfully almost 60 years later (that is, aside from the characterisation of Mr. Yunioshi). It features one of the most famous movie cats - simply named Cat - as well as one of the best rain-set scenes ever. And you gotta love that opening.
My Fair Lady
Based on George Bernard Shaw's play 'Pygmalion', 'My Fair Lady' was something else entirely with the addition of musical numbers. Hepburn was perfection as a lower class flower girl whom a snobbish phonetics professor teaches to be a lady. Rex Harrison made for the perfect Henry Higgins but Hepburn truly stole the show as Eliza Doolittle.
Roman Holiday
With summer being just around the corner, it seems like the perfect time to revisit 'Roman Holiday'. Hepburn plays a princess who manages to escape from her guardians and take to the streets of Italy's capital. She ends up meeting a newsman played by Gregory Peck and falling for him. 'Roman Holiday's director, William Wyler, would go on to helm 'Ben-Hur'.
Sabrina
The legendary Billy Wilder - the man behind 'The Apartment', 'Some Like it Hot' and 'Sunset Boulevard' - helmed this one. Humphrey Bogart and William Holden play two wealthy brothers who are both interested in the daughter of their family's chauffeur. Hepburn captivates as Sabrina, who has the men enthralled after she returns from Paris transformed.
Charade
Audrey Hepburn could always go toe to toe with the big name actors she shared the screen with and it was no different with Cary Grant in 'Charade'. The suspenseful rom com has been referred to as "the best Hitchcock movie that Hitchcock never made". It follows a woman pursued by several men who want a fortune her murdered husband stole.
HONOURABLE MENTION
Funny Face
As with 'Charade', Stanley Donen of 'Singin in the Rain' fame directed this one. It sees an impromptu fashion shoot at a book store bring about a new fashion model discovery in the shop clerk - the clerk being Hepburn, of course. Fred Astaire co-stars.
