Werner Herzog is undoubtedly the last person you'd expect to have an opinion on the Pokemon GO craze.
For one thing, he claims he doesn't have a mobile phone "for cultural reasons" and is, well, a bit odd. He was shot during an interview and kept going, he once hypnotised an entire film crew and he didn't even make his first phone call until he was 17.
He also directed some of the most important and genre-defining films of our time and was called the most important director alive by Francois Truffuat. So, yeah, let's see what he has to say about Pokemon GO. At least that's what The Verge's thinking was when they pitched him the question in a recent interview.
When first asked if he was aware of Pokemon GO, Herzog simply replied in the negative before asking his interviewer exactly what it entailed. After explaining the idea of augmented reality and the overlaying of real-world places, Herzog made a further enquiry. "When two persons in search of a pokémon clash at the corner of Sunset and San Vicente is there violence? Is there murder?"
Classic Herzog. Of course, the interviewer explained that they fight in a virtual setting with their captured beasts. "Do they bite each other’s hands? Do they punch each other?"
The interview went on, before Herzog before finished the topic of Pokemon GO by saying that "...you'd have to give me a cell phone, which I'm not going to use anyway, and I have no clue what's going on there, but I don't need to play the game."
Well, that settles it then. Werner Herzog will never be joining Team Mystic, Instinct or Valour.
As you were.
