To put it simply, Summer Athletics 2009 is as welcome in your game collection as a rain cloud is on a sunny summer day. Even my Wii didn't want to play it, as it spit the game out when I first inserted it into the console.
Even if you can look past the lifeless graphics and the sub-par sound, past the dull interface and the annoying monkey that appears nearly everywhere in the game (like some poorly animated mascot of mediocrity), and for some reason give the game a chance to impress you with good gameplay, you will be sorely disappointed.
The events themselves range from the boring to the insanely frustrating; the hurdles can be won without actually clearing a single hurdle, while most of the other events have terrible control mechanics requiring multiple pages of instructions. Sure, you will find the occasional respite from boredom when you stumble upon one of the better events, like the archery which has a surprisingly satisfying feel to it, but these moments are few and far between.
If self-torment pushes your buttons then this is the game for you, otherwise try Wii Sports Resort, or any other game for that matter.
