Shadows of the Damned is an ultra-violent shooter which depicts Mexican demon-hunter Garcia Hotspur’s journey through hell to rescue his girlfriend, all the while accompanied by his best friend and companion, a talking skull known as Johnson. The game’s quirky sense of humour is highlighted by this talking skull who morphs into weapons, vehicles and other useful items as well as providing an amusing enough running commentary.
The game itself is a passable enough on the rails shooter - with above average boss fights - and it features the usual array of upgradable pistols, shotguns and other assorted demonic weaponry. The developers make good use out of various audio and lighting tricks throughout and the title looks different distinct to other games in this genre. Perhaps the most original aspect to the title is its nod to PC shooters in that it allows players to turn around 180 degrees almost instantly by pressing two buttons simultaneously.
Unfortunately, gamers attracted to this niche shooter will have little reason to play the game more than once as they can’t carry over their upgraded weapons to a fresh campaign.
Hell has rules about this sort of thing, it seems.
