Although most people associate videogames with teenagers and adolescents, there's now a growing community of players over the ages of 50 who are taking to world of multiplayer and MMORPGs.
There's a grandmother who's been playing Skyrim and streaming her adventures on YouTube for over a year (and become a gaming celebrity in the process). However, this particular story is quite touching. Destiny is another role-playing game in which players take part in 'raids' against locations, often joining up to take out a much bigger target or the like.
One player, a woman who goes under the name LucentBeam, put out a call for a particular raid and happened upon a relatively inexperienced player. The purpose of the raid is take on an inexperienced player and work with them to fight through the raid. As it turned out, the player in question was a retired widower who'd taken up gaming - and Destiny - as a way of keeping himself occupied.
LucentBeam streamed the whole experience with the player, in which he talked about playing Destiny - even though his hands are shaky due to his old age - and how the game keep his mind sharp.
Here's a clip from the stream itself.
The stream and the grandfather's story soon became viral and caught the attention both of Destiny's vibrant community of players and the developers of the game, Bungie. In the space of just two days, players managed to raise around $3,000 to send the grandfather to GuardianCon, a fan event for Destiny players.
Just goes to show that gaming can have a positive effect on the world.
