The fabled 'Nintendo PlayStation' will end up being the single most-expensive piece of video game memorabilia.
Gather round, children, and let us tell you of a time when Sony and Nintendo almost made a console together.
Once upon a time in Japan, Sony wanted to get in on the console business and tried to develop a a prototype console - titled the PlayStation - with Nintendo, the then-leading light of the console manufacturers. Needless to say, the Nintendo PlayStation went nowhere and Sony branched out on their own to make the console we know today.
Naturally, this has made the early prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation incredibly valuable as it's so rare - and one such copy of the Nintendo PlayStation is now up for auction, with the current bid sitting at $350,000. The auction has been running for the past number of the days, with final bids due to be entered on March 6th.
So far, the leading bidder is Palmer Luckey, the founder of the Oculus VR and the designer of the Oculus Rift. Luckey, if he's successful in the auction, will have paid for the single most-expensive piece of video game memorabilia in history, dwarfing a sealed first-print copy of 'Super Mario Bros.' that went for over $100,000 last year.
There's dozens of YouTube videos that detail the history of what happened to the Nintendo PlayStation, how it ended up in storage for years, what happened between Nintendo and Sony, but this video from Engadget four years ago shows what it actually looks like when you start the thing up.
As it turns out, it's not all that impressive - but it's fascinating for its rarity, nonetheless. Take a look.
