Francis Lawrence will helm the Netflix adaptation of the hit game
The 'Bioshock' film at Netflix has landed a director in the form of Francis Lawrence.
A film version of the hit game was announced earlier this year, with a film by 'Pirates of the Caribbean' director Gore Verbinski nearly made in the late 2000s but cancelled over budgetary concerns.
Netflix's take on 'Bioshock' will be written by Michael Green, who received an Oscar nomination for writing 'Logan' in 2017.
Per Deadline, Lawrence was chosen to direct thanks to his work on the 'Hunger Games' movies, which displayed his capability of working in the confines of a hit franchise.
Lawrence is also known for directing the 2007 Will Smith hit 'I Am Legend'.
The original 'Bioshock' was released in August 2007 to rave reviews and strong sales, and helped gaming be treated seriously as an artform thanks to it's philosophical, mind-bending story.
The plot of the original 'Bioshock' concerns the sole survivor of a deadly plane crash finding himself trapped in the underwater city of Rapture, a society that is based upon the ideals of philosopher Ayn Rand.
The most recent game in the series, 2013's 'Bioshock Infinite' took place in the sky-based city of Columbia, a city run on the ideals of the founding fathers of the United States.
The games combine high-octane action with smart writing and a political bent, making for a potential new film franchise with brains and brawn.
Filming on the 'Bioshock' movie will begin once Lawrence wraps up filming on his 'Hunger Games' prequel 'Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes'.
A potential late 2023 or early 2024 release date is likely for the 'Bioshock' film, with casting and plot details to follow in due course.
